Tonight was Joshua Petker's latest show "We're not as colorful as we think we are." at the Shooting Gallery San Francisco.
Joshua Petker is known for his often iconic, striking and explosive paintings of gorgeous ladies. This is the third show we've seen from Mr. Petker at the Shooting Gallery, and each seems to push the envelope and break new ground for the artist.

The paintings were an explosion of color, and the ladies, and gentlemen depicted are often familiar faces; if you're from LA you actually might recognize some of the subjects.  This show really seems to toy with the idea of negative space on the canvas. There is a fearless usage of the off white space, that if other artists attempted may fail to properly exploit. Petker uses this risky move to make the entire show a true triumph and only make his figures "pop" even more than the bright colors already do.

Joshua's usage of color, subject mater, and seemingly effortless/elegant rendering makes his paintings incredibly alluring. Joshua's, personal, playful, affable, and modest demeanor really is part of the artist's vast likability in his oeuvre, and translates well to canvas. Even as he achieves greater and greater artistic success there isn't even the slightest tinge of arrogance.

We asked Joshua what he's working on next and he told us he's very excited to start working on a new series of watercolor Ballerina's for the Chicago Ballet.

We look forward to continuing to watch this contemporary impressionist master and his explosive colors blast the art world with beauty.
